Pinterest Recipes: Failure or Success?

Today seemed like a good day for a trip to the grocery store and some Pinterest recipe tests. It is cold and rainy, so why not? I scrounged my pins and decided to purchase ingredients for:

Key Lime Pie Cupcakes

Mexican Sweet Potato Skins

Cheery Cheesecake Dip

Cinnamon French Toast Bake

I have made the French toast bake before (it is delicious) and plan to save it for Sunday morning breakfast.

We decided to go to the Children’s Museum in the middle of the day, so I only got to two recipes, and I have to say, both are WINNERS.

Key Lime Pie Cupcakes:

Ok, right away, I can tell you wasn’t about to make lime curd, because F that S. So, I bought the Dickenson’s brand, which is usually stocked with the jellies and jams in the grocery store. Also, I decided not to fancy up the frosting, because I don’t care. What I DID decided to do was fill the cupcakes with lime curd, which was a good decision.

They now make a boxed key lime cake and frosting. Done and done. While I was in the baking aisle, I decided to try the Orange Dreamsicle cake and frosting, which I will be baking tomorrow.

I baked the cupcakes and let them cool while we were at the museum. When I got back, I filled a piping bag and tip with the store-bought curd and filled each one. Then, I frosted the cakes, topping each with more of the graham cracker mix that was at the bottom of each cake, per the recipe. Then, I finished them off with a dollop (yes, I used the cursed word) of curd.

Yum. So good, and so much easier than the recipe would indicate.

Mexican Sweet Potato Skins:

Holy delicious.

I didn’t really stray from the recipe at all. I bought the most bulbous potatoes I could find, figuring I would need the room to fill them back in. Then I baked them at 375 for a little over an hour. I used a mixer with a whisk attachment to mix all of the ingredients, which worked well. Also, I only used 2 chipotles in adobo, which was plenty of smoke and heat for me.

Wow. They are freaking good. Highly recommend. They are big enough to be the main dish. I am going to whip up some kale for a side dish, but I am going to sauté it with bacon, which will keep this from being a vegetarian meal. Why? Because BACON.

So, I had Pinterest success today. I do love to spend the weekend cooking and putting delicious things in my belly.

“Number 4” Presenting 4 Fab Flicks You May Have Missed…(or haven’t seen yet!)

My husband and I enjoy many “together activities”… 😉 but one in particular takes up A Lot of our time – watching MOVIES! As a new mother of a 1 month old (in 2 days!) this will soon become an enjoyed pastime that is somewhat altered. As we may not be able to hit up our popcorn and Raisinets-fueled, $35.00+ trip to the theater…we always have Comcast On-Demand and Netflix 🙂

With that being said…I’d like to highlight some of our fav flicks that you may have missed, just not seen yet, disqualified, etc. Whatever the case may be…here’s a few to consider or reconsider –

Olympus Has Fallen

120 min‎‎ – Rated R‎‎ – Action/Adventure/Suspense/Thriller‎

Director: Antoine Fuqua – Cast: Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Aaron Eckhart, Ashley Judd

When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning¹s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President and avert an even bigger disaster.

Perhaps it’s my Massive crush on Gerard, the fact that we live in a suburb of D.C. or a combination of both, that I really enjoyed this movie. It was action-packed from beginning to end, the actors had true talent and the ending didn’t disappoint. As great as this movie was…it did not put out the typical media promotion that most blockbusters do. So…because of this…you may have missed it. If so, go see it…Meow! You’re welcome.

Total Recall (remake of Schwarzenegger’s original)

118 min – Rated PG-13 – Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi

Director: Len Wiseman – Cast: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston

The film centers upon an ordinary factory worker who accidentally discovers that his current life is a fabrication predicated upon false memories implanted into his brain by the government. Ensuing events leave no room for doubt that his true identity is that of a highly-trained secret agent. He then follows a trail of clues to gradually recover more suppressed memories and reassumes his original vocation with renewed dedication. Unlike the original film, the plot takes place on Earth rather than a trip to Mars and exhibits more political overtones.

To be honest…I never even saw the original in its entirety but I said “Self! Colin Farrell is in it…it’s worth a watch!” I was pleasantly surprised. Similar to Olympus, this movie delivers fast paced action from start to finish. The futuristic take on society is fascinating while depressing at the same time. I found myself somewhat confused with the plot here and there but wanting more. If my memory serves me correctly (and mind you…I’ve had “baby brain” for the past 9 months…so it’s quite possible that it does Not)…I was also impressed with the accompanying music.

Seven Psychopaths

110 min – Rated R – Comedy/Crime

Director: Martin McDonagh – Cast: Sam Rockwell, Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken

A struggling screenwriter, Marty (Farrell), inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster’s beloved Shih Tzu. He dreams of finishing his screenplay, “Seven Psychopaths” and will get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.

This was my husband’s choice as I was skeptical. However, the promising star lineup won me over. This dark comedy was a refreshing escape from the typical Will Ferrell funnies we tend to admittedly watch…and watch again….and again. The plot of this movie is so bizarre and farfetched but not over imagined. Not unlike this movie, we live in a CrayCray world these days…you Never know what types of people or circumstances you may be faced with eventually! The main character, Marty (Farrell), is dealing with Extreme personalities in an impossible situation. The combination of jaw dropping moments and plot twists makes this a must see.

119 min – Rated R – Action/Crime/Sci-Fi

Director: Rian Johnson – Cast:  Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt

In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe (Gordon-Levitt), who one day learns the mob wants to ‘close the loop’ by transporting back Joe’s future self (Willis).

One of 2012’s best movies in my opinion… The storyline mirrored the complexity of Leo’s Inception complemented with a fresh plot scenario. Nothing is worse than a movie that is simply a re-creation of the same shit you’ve already seen (aka Friends With Benefits vs. No Strings Attached…Really!?) Anyways…I digress. I had to watch this one twice to completely grasp the ending. However, a movie that makes you think and you’re willing to watch it more than once to understand (Hello…Fight Club!) makes Looper a movie you should check out.

As I sum up my movie recommendations, I realize that I have been drawn to futuristic action flicks! I am not one to discriminate by genre, but this surprises me. I tend to enjoy the whimsical tear jerkers, can’t-sleep-without-the-lights-on-if Alan’s-not-home horrors or classic comedies jam-packed with one-liners I can repeat…and repeat (right, Mir!?)

So in closing – I’m asking for you to dedicate approximately 8 hours of your life to watch the aforementioned pictures. Worst case scenario, you’ll be able to identify plots that bore you or actors that don’t do it for ya! But all in all…I believe I’ve presented you with gratifying entertainment options for your viewing considerations.  Cheers!
